Microsoft has changed the Xbox Live service status from “up and running” to “Service Alert.” The warning has been issued due to “potential phishing attempts via title specific messaging while playing Modern Warfare 2.”
Currently only the Matchmaking service has been affected, while Xbox Live, Marketplace, and Account services are all still green-lit on the official Xbox Live Status page.
The news follows reports (via NeoGaf) of banned consoles mysteriously gaining access to Xbox Live for a short time last night, before subsequently getting locked out of the service again. It’s not yet clear what the cause of this fluctuation was, although it’s possible that it was due to security testing by Microsoft in the wake of the current PSN hacking crisis.
